The difference between seamless steel pipe and stainless steel welded steel pipe?

Seamless steel pipes and stainless steel welded steel pipes are two common types of pipes, which have many differences in production processes, material characteristics, performance, and application scenarios. The following is a detailed introduction:

Production process

seamless steel tube

Production principle: Seamless steel pipes are made through perforation technology. The basic production process is to heat the steel billet (or continuous casting billet) to a certain temperature, perforate it on the perforation machine, then roll it into a pipe on the pipe rolling machine, and finally produce the finished product through processes such as sizing (or reducing). This process ensures that the entire body of the steel pipe has no welds and the entire pipe wall is continuous.

Production characteristics: The production process is relatively complex, requiring high temperature heating and multiple rolling processes, with high requirements for production equipment and technology. Due to the absence of welds, its overall strength and reliability are to some extent higher.

Stainless steel welded steel pipe

Production principle: Stainless steel welded steel pipe is made by rolling stainless steel strip (or steel plate) into a tube shape through a forming machine, and then welding the pipe seams together using welding technology. Welding processes usually include high-frequency welding, argon arc welding, etc. After welding is completed, further processing is required, such as polishing and heat treatment of the weld seam, to ensure its quality.

Production characteristics: The production process is relatively simple and the production efficiency is high. The production process mainly involves rolling and welding the sheet metal, which has a high utilization rate of raw materials and relatively low cost.

Material characteristics

Material range: Seamless steel pipes come in a wide variety of materials, including ordinary carbon steel (such as Q235), high-quality carbon structural steel (such as 20 #, 45 #), alloy structural steel (such as 16Mn, 40Cr), etc. These materials have different properties and can be selected according to different usage requirements.

Mechanical properties: Due to its good overall integrity, the mechanical properties of seamless steel pipes are relatively uniform. When subjected to loads such as pressure and tension, its strength and toughness perform well. For example, in high-pressure fluid pipelines, seamless steel pipes can withstand internal pressure well and are less prone to local weak points.

Stainless steel welded steel pipe

Material range: Mainly using stainless steel materials, common ones include austenitic stainless steel (such as 304, 316), ferritic stainless steel (such as 430), etc. Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and high temperature performance, making welded steel pipes outstanding in these aspects.

Mechanical properties: Although the performance of welded steel pipes at the weld seam may be slightly lower than that of the base metal, their overall mechanical properties can still meet most usage requirements through reasonable welding processes and subsequent treatments. In some environments that require high corrosion resistance, such as chemical pipelines and food processing equipment, stainless steel welded steel pipes can effectively resist the erosion of corrosive media.

Performance Performance

Pressure bearing capacity: Seamless steel pipes have advantages in bearing pressure, especially in high-pressure environments. Due to the absence of welds, its overall structure is more stable and can withstand higher internal pressures. For example, in oil and gas pipelines, seamless steel pipes can withstand high pressure to ensure the safe operation of the pipelines.

Corrosion resistance: The corrosion resistance of ordinary carbon steel seamless steel pipes is relatively poor, but its corrosion resistance can be improved through surface treatment (such as galvanizing, painting, etc.). Some alloy structural steel seamless steel pipes (such as stainless steel seamless steel pipes) have good corrosion resistance.

Dimensional accuracy: Seamless steel pipes have relatively high dimensional accuracy and good wall thickness uniformity, which can meet some situations with high requirements for dimensional accuracy.

Stainless steel welded steel pipe

Pressure bearing capacity: The pressure bearing capacity of welded steel pipes is slightly lower than that of seamless steel pipes, but it can still meet general industrial and civilian needs. By optimizing the welding process and structural design, its pressure bearing capacity can be improved.

Corrosion resistance: The corrosion resistance of stainless steel welded steel pipes is one of their main advantages. Stainless steel material itself has good corrosion resistance. Even though the corrosion resistance at the weld seam may be affected during the welding process, its corrosion resistance can still meet the requirements of most corrosive environments through reasonable welding processes and subsequent treatments.

Dimensional accuracy: The dimensional accuracy of welded steel pipes is slightly lower than that of seamless steel pipes, mainly because some deformation may occur during the welding process. However, with advanced production equipment and process control, its dimensional accuracy can also be well guaranteed.

Application scenarios

seamless steel tube

In the industrial field, it is widely used in industries such as petroleum, chemical, and natural gas to transport high-pressure fluids, such as oil pipelines and natural gas pipelines. In the field of mechanical manufacturing, seamless steel pipes are also commonly used to manufacture mechanical structural components, such as automotive transmission shafts, hydraulic supports, etc.

In the field of architecture, seamless steel pipes can be used to make steel structure frames, bridge components, etc. Due to its high strength and good toughness, it can withstand large loads.

Stainless steel welded steel pipe

Chemical industry: Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, stainless steel welded steel pipes are commonly used in chemical pipelines for transporting corrosive media such as acid, alkali, salt and other solutions.

Food processing industry: In food processing equipment such as beverage production lines, food conveying pipelines, etc., stainless steel welded steel pipes can ensure the hygiene and safety of food and prevent food contamination.

In the field of architectural decoration, stainless steel welded steel pipes can also be used for architectural decoration, such as railings, handrails, etc. They have a beautiful appearance, good corrosion resistance, and long service life.
